Actual/Actual follows the current age year

Under Actual/Actual, completed calendar years remain whole. The remaining days since the latest birthday are divided by the actual number of days until the next birthday. A leap day can therefore make that anniversary year 366 days long.

The average Gregorian option instead divides the entire elapsed-day total by 365.2425. Over long intervals the values are close, but they need not match at the displayed precision.

Precision is formatting, not new evidence

Showing six decimal places can help a numerical workflow, but it cannot recover an unknown birth time. Date-only input remains precise to calendar days. Round only as required and retain the original dates for auditability.

When calendar age is the better answer

Use years, months, and days for birthdays, forms, and human-readable anniversaries. Use decimal years when a formula, dataset, or graph explicitly expects a continuous number. Do not label either method universally exact without naming its purpose.
