Measure wall-clock shifts or real instants
The Hours and Time Duration Calculator supports two different jobs. Time-only mode measures a same-day or overnight shift from clock labels. Zoned date-time mode compares real instants that can use different dates and timezones. Keeping those modes distinct prevents daylight-saving changes from being mistaken for ordinary subtraction errors.
The result includes gross duration, break deduction, net hours and minutes, decimal hours, total minutes and seconds, overnight status, timezone offset context, and the exact start and end order. Inputs use the site's Material-style time picker while preserving stable 24-hour values for calculation.
Choose the right kind of time interval
- Use Times or work shift when both clock labels follow one ordinary local schedule.
- Mark an overnight shift when the end occurs on the next day, then enter any unpaid break minutes.
- Use Zoned date and time for travel, remote events, DST transitions, or timestamps in different regions.
- Calculate and use net duration for the adjusted interval while retaining gross time and break details for review.
Crossing midnight is not a negative shift
A shift from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM ends earlier on the clock face but later on the timeline. The overnight setting advances the end to the following day before subtraction. Without that instruction, the tool cannot know whether the inputs were reversed or crossed midnight.
The result names the rollover so it can be checked before the net hours are used.
Decimal hours are not hours and minutes notation
Seven hours 30 minutes equals 7.5 decimal hours, not 7.30. Decimal hours are useful for multiplication and spreadsheets; clock notation is easier to read. Both derive from the same net minute total.
DST can change elapsed instant time
When clocks move forward or backward, the visible local-time difference can disagree with real elapsed time. Zoned mode applies IANA timezone rules to each instant. This remains a calculator, not payroll or labor-law advice; employers may define rounding, paid breaks, and premiums separately.
When start and end use different timezones, compare the resolved UTC instants in the result. Two identical local clock labels can still be several hours apart.
Frequently asked questions
Answers about overnight shifts, breaks, decimal hours, DST, reversed timestamps, and payroll limits.
How do I calculate an overnight shift?
Enter start and end times and select Shift ends the next day so the end is advanced across midnight.
Where are unpaid breaks deducted?
Enter total break minutes. The result shows gross duration, deduction, and net duration as separate values.
What is 7 hours 30 minutes in decimal hours?
It is 7.5 hours because 30 minutes is one-half of 60, not the decimal fraction .30.
Does daylight saving time affect the answer?
It can in zoned mode. The selected IANA timezone resolves the actual offset at each entered timestamp.
What if the break exceeds the gross duration?
The calculator rejects an impossible negative net interval and asks for corrected times or break minutes.
Can this calculate payroll automatically?
No. It returns time duration; pay rates, rounding, overtime, paid breaks, and labor rules must be applied separately.
